Disaster Relief

In the last couple of weeks Asia has experienced natural disasters of massive proportions. As the death toll rises, we must act now, or even again, to alleviate the suffering of those affected.

UMA feels it is important to donate through experienced and reputable charities that will manage and employ the funds on the ground. Thank you to our UMA members who suggested the following organisations. And thank you for generous support and spreading the word to your friends! All the organisations below accept credit card donations so our alumni and friends all over the world can donate easily too.

UNICEF has been on the ground in Sichuan since 1979, principally working on childhood development projects. Immediately after the earthquake struck, they despatched a first consignment of medical supplies, safe drinking water, quilts, tents, and educational kits to the stricken areas. In any disaster, children unfortunately are usually the most vulnerable group. Temporary shelters are being set up to provide a safe and caring environment for the affected ones with the aim of getting them back to some form of normality in school life as a first priority. Next comes the counselling needed in helping them overcome the trauma of witnessing the loss of parents, homes, and friends. UNICEF will be providing the training and support to the local professionals in this aspect. UNICEF will also help with the reprovisioning of schools and primary health care facilities in the longer term.

How to donate:

Donations are gratefully accepted over the phone +852-2833 6139 and through their website. UNICEF are equally working in Myanmar to assist the cyclone and subsequent flood victims.
